After the successful sale of his company to Installed Building Products [NYSE-IBP] Mr. James continues to serve as coach to IBP’s companies in the Raleigh area.
Mr. James attained his CPA certificate after graduating from NCSU with a B.A. in Accounting (’77). He worked at Price Waterhouse & Co. then was the CFO for a public company in RTP. While working full-time, he received his M.B.A. from the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University (’84), where he was a Fuqua Scholar.
In 1987 Mr. James purchased a privately-owned company and spent the next 34 years acquiring, fixing, consolidating and ultimately selling businesses in various industries.
Mr. James was active in the North Carolina Petroleum Marketer’s Association: President (1999); Board Member (1995-00); Chairman of the Underground Storage Tank Committee during implementation of Federal & State rule making. He assisted in development and was a part-time instructor for Amoco’s Architecture of Excellence seminar series. He has served on the Dealer Advisory Boards of Amoco, Clopay Building Products and The Cookson Company. Mr. James has served as a Board Member of the Institute of Door Dealer Education & Accreditation (IDEA) an industry safety initiative.
Mr. James has served as Chairman of the Wake Forest Chamber of Commerce & was later selected as Small Businessman of the year. He has chaired the Board of Trustees, various committees & has twice been Chair of the Board of Deacons at First Baptist Church Raleigh.
Currently Treasurer of North State Game Club; Sharefish.org & NSGC Property LLC., he was formerly on the Board of Trustees at Gardner-Webb University, the Board of Advisors for the Campbell Divinity School and the Board of Camp Oak Hill.
Mr. James lives in Raleigh, where his wife Catherine (Cathy) McCracken James (a “Meredith Angel” ’77) is retired from Motheread, Inc., a literacy organization. They have a son Will who is the Principal Percussionist with the St. Louis Symphony and a daughter Sarah who resides in Raleigh & works with the YMCA.
