For first-year students, the start of college and a new chapter in your life is quickly approaching! Spend these last few weeks relaxing, packing, and reading the book selection for Meredith’s Summer Reading Program.

What is this year’s book selection? 

This year’s book selection is The Bill of Obligations, by Richard Haass. In addition to the book, there are resources, including podcast episodes, videos, and text you should look at as well. 

We hope this very straightforward and clear discussion of basic expectations for American citizenship will help demystify the democratic process, assist you in conducting constructive conversations, and encourage you to enact positive change in your communities.

How is the book selected? 

The Summer Reading Program committee, which includes faculty, staff, and students, reviews and discusses several books to recommend to the Executive Leadership Team. The Executive Leadership then selects the final choice. 

What is the purpose of the program?

The program enhances the academic climate on campus by engaging incoming first-year students in a shared intellectual endeavor with the entire campus community, including students, faculty, staff, and alumnae.

How will we discuss the book? 

First-year students will gather in small discussion groups during their first semester to discuss the book and additional resources. Guided by trained faculty and staff facilitators and student advisors, students talk and reflect on the shared reading and how its theme relates to their own lives.
