Undergraduate research at Meredith offers direction and support for students who are ready to be original, to push at the boundaries of the classroom and the textbook, and to connect with others who share their interests. We work with students in all disciplines and academic programs.

Programs and opportunities include the following:
Summer Stipend Projects
Student/faculty teams use the summer months to pursue a research or creative project in an area of common interest. The college offers students a stipend to allow for intensive study and exploration. Click here for further details. The Summer Stipend Proposal Workshop is Monday, March 25, 2013 at 10am and the Summer Stipend Applications are due Tuesday, April 23, 2013. Students present projects at the annual Taste of Research in September.
Travel Grants
A growing number of professional and academic conferences now feature the work of undergraduates. We encourage students to use these opportunities to present research and to network. The program offers up to $250 to cover travel, registration, and preparation costs for student presenters. Applications are reviewed monthly. Click here for an application form.
Research Grants
Your research may involve expenses for materials that go beyond your budget and your department is not able to provide. We consider requests for research support throughout the academic year, as long as we have funds to offer. Applications are reviewed monthly Click here for an application.
Cooperative Mentored Research Program
Meredith College undergraduate students have the opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research at a neighboring research institution, including Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). While Meredith provides diverse research opportunities for undergraduate students with faculty mentors, outside research experiences allow students to practice advanced research skills under the mentorship of discipline-specific experts, which prepares them for graduate school and professional careers. Celebrating Student Achievement Day, Tuesday, April 16, 2013
This campus-wide day of events features the results of student research, with presentations, panel discussions, poster sessions, exhibitions, and performances. Applications and deadlines will be published at the Celebrating Student Achievement Day Web Site early in February.

Erin |
•Erin graduated in May 2010 with a major in Spanish. •Erin’s research combined her joint passions for the Spanish language and fashion. Her thesis title was, El tesoro de la moda: El vestuario del teatro español de la Edad de Oro (The Treasure of Fashion: The Wardrobe of the Spanish Golden Age Theater). •Erin is now enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Spanish literature at the University of Virginia. |
•Kavya majored in psychology & biology. •She presented her research as one of the only undergraduate presenters at two national professional psychology conferences. •Kavya also conducted research at the Environmental Protection Agency in the Triangle. •She is now a medical student at the Wake Forest Univeristy School of Medicine. |

•Kristen, a current Meredith student, has participated in URP Summer Research for the past two summers. •Her projects include research on the history and techniques of encaustic art and a study of contemporary Cambodian art. In the summer of 2011, she traveled to Cambodia to study abroad and conduct research. •Kristen has presented “Discoveries in Encaustic: A Look Through History” at several conferences. •She is using her research on Cambodia to present a lecture event called "A Deeper Look: Cambodian Experiences Shared with the Meredith Community." The lecture will include four scholars to discuss "Cambodian civil society, immigration issues in North Carolina, education, and archaeology." |
