I have been in Italy for just over a week and have already visited Rome, Anghiari, Perugia, and Assisi. In Rome I saw amazing architecture like St. Peter’s Basilica and the Coliseum. Inside St. Peter’s I was overwhelmed by the beautiful frescos, statues, and extravagant ornamentation that covered the interior. I had a chance to see Michelangelo’s Pieta and Bernini’s Baldacchino, two pieces I learned about in an art history class at Meredith. We also took a tour of the Coliseum and learned the history behind the amphitheatre. While we were in Rome we also visited the Trevi fountain and a medieval style castle.
I was excited once we arrived in Sansepolcro because the town is small compared to Rome. It feels like we are getting a real taste of the Italian lifestyle and we have already made new friends. Yesterday our group we went to the Bussatti looms where fine fabrics are made. The family company has been around for many years and continues to make textile products from linen, cotton, and hemp. Local women embroider and add lace detail for custom orders. So far I have learned a lot about the Italian culture while I have been here and I can’t wait to see what tomorrow’s adventures hold.
