Journals from Ireland

A group of nine students, accompanied by Assistant Professor of Health, Exercise and Sports Science Kim Bush, are participating in the Outdoor Pursuits, Education & Leadership program with Meredith Abroad.

The program will take place at Adventure Ireland, a camp housed in Bundoran where students will learn, explore and live. Bundoran is a small coastal surf town between the cities of Sligo and Donegal, which is known as a living museum of culture in Ireland.

Throughout this program students will both engage in and lead outdoor activities such as:  surfing, high and low ropes courses, hiking, kayaking, rock climbing (wall), beach lifeguarding and/or occupational first aid. Students will have the opportunity to gain an international certification in at least one of the above areas. Additionally, the course will focus on learning about various aspects of Irish history, culture, politics, and language. A typical day will consist of a training session in one of the above outdoor pursuit activities, a lesson on Irish culture, and a day field trip. The daily routine is designed to challenge the individual cognitively and physically, and teach skills and dispositions essential to global citizenship.

Students will earn credit for PED 940:  Outdoor Pursuits, Education, and Leadership, IDS 940 - U.S. Perspectives on Irish Culture and Core 200.
