Student Orientation to Technology Services

The Technology Services Department provides technology leadership and serves as the primary technology support structure for Meredith College. This structure offers the following to our college community: service, support and consulting. This support is offered through the defined teams as outlined in the sections below:

Teams:
Campus Computing Services primary job function is to offer training scenarios to the faculty and staff of Meredith College. However, this group also offers support to students via: online support materials and a variety of workshops.

Technical Resources is responsible for maintaining the Postal Center, the campus Print and copy fleet, the Print and Copy Center that can also be used by students and employees for all printing and copying needs, and the Course Evaluation system that Meredith College uses for student feedback relating to course and instructor quality.

IT Business Services provides support for the Laptop Program (program's last distribution will be the Spring 2013 semester), provides operation support for the network and personal printer fleet used by employees, maintains Meredith College software contracts (including student/employee purchasing), administers the tech services web pages, and maintains campus computing equipment inventories.

Information Systems Services provide programming, technical support, and report writing for administrative applications such as Colleague, Powerfaids, Recruitment Plus, RaisersEdge, Webadvisor, Informer and Astra Scheduling.

Network Services is responsible for building and maintaining the campus network and telecommunications infrastructure. This includes: network and telephone cabling; equipment maintenance; operating systems; application servers; IP telephone and voice-mail set-up; and campus network connection/maintenance to the Internet.

User Services work out of the Noel Annex bringing together both help desk and desktop personal to provide hardware and software support to employees and students still participating in the now discontinued laptop program. Limited technical support is provided to studetns without Meredith Laptops.

Technology Access
Each student, taking at least one class, will be issued email, Blackboard, and Webadvisor account. It is important to keep this information and maintain confidentiality with the account logins prohibiting access to personal information. Technology Services will never use email to ask for passwords: please do not provide it to others.



Email - New students will be issued a Gmail account which is part of the Google Apps Suite. Students are encouraged to access email regularly for important information that will be sent only to Meredith email accounts. This includes billing and registration information, as well as information about logging into other accounts.
  Students will receive an email login and password in May for the fall semester and December for the spring semester. For more information visit the Email site.



Blackboard - is an online content management system used by faculty, staff, and students to share documents, resources, and online tools. Faculty frequently uses it to supplement course materials used in class. Many student organizations use Blackboard to share materials or communicate easily with one another.
 
Students will receive a Blackboard login and password via email after their Meredith College email accounts have been established. For more information visit the Blackboard site.



Webadvisor - provides students and employees access to Meredith Colleges databases. Students will have access to grades, schedules, course history, and be able to register for classes via Wedadvisor. For access to Webadvisor use https://advisor.meredith.edu/ or use the link off the Enews page.

  Students will receive a Webadvisor login and password prior to registering for classes. For more information visit the Meredith's Webadvisor information page.

Computer Labs
Students have access to both Common and Department labs whenever classes are not using them. Lab schedules, locations, and application offerings are available by visiting the Desktop/Computer Labs site.

Technology Services Help Desk
The Help Desk has several main functions: provide superior customer service to students, staff, and faculty while supporting software issues and hardware repair for Meredith owned laptops. No is appointments necessary. For location, hours, and contact information please visit the Help Desk site.


Meredith Laptops: All students with Meredith laptops should bring them in to the Help Desk to be serviced for all software and hardware related issues.
 
Loaner laptops are given to students while their machines are being repaired. Loaner laptops must be returned within 48 business hours after the first contact about your repaired laptop, to avoid a $10 per day late fee. If the loaner laptop is not returned after 14 days it will be treated as an Honor Code violation and referred to the Office of Dean of Students
 
Laptops are fixed on a first come first serve basis. Turn-around time will vary depending on the workload and the severity of the issues regarding your laptop. Once a technician has fixed the laptop, you will receive a phone call and or email informing you of the completion. Please remember that valid photo ID is required to pick-up your laptop.


Non-Meredith Laptops: Students without Meredith issued laptops can bring their personal laptops in to the Technology Services Help Desk to have the wireless configured so they can connect to the Meredith wireless network.



Backing Up your Data: We suggest that you make regular current backups of your data. If possible prior to bringing your machine in for service please back-up your data. We will make every effort to recover your data in the event of component failure or if the laptops condition requires it but will make no guarantee that it can or will be recovered.




Course Software: Certain software for class use is available at the help desk for installation on Meredith owned equipment. If you have a Meredith laptop you can go to Blackboard and install it yourself. For a list of available software, please enroll in the Blackboard course called Software downloads and updates. In the Blackboard section, you will find a link to resources that contain a video.

Wireless
Meredith College provides students, employees, and quests with wireless network access in or around the majority of the buildings on campus. The two Meredith profiles are the Meredith Private and Meredith Public profiles.


Meredith Private Profile: Meredith students are given access to the Meredith College profile. This profile is the preferred profile that provides access all Meredith websites as well as the internet.
  Students with personal laptops - When connecting to the Meredith Wireless network you will select the SSID Meredith2009-10. The password is Meredith2009-10. Students with Lenovo laptops that are having issues connecting, download Access Connection for Lenovo Laptops.


Meredith Public Profile: All students, employees, and guests have access to the Meredith public profile. Installation is not required. The public profile does come with limitations. Select sites will not available while connected to the internet.

Printing
Meredith College uses the Pharos print management system for student printing on the campus. The systems is used to contribute to the greening of the Meredith Campus by reducing the amount of wasteful printing.
Printers are located in all the residence halls, the apartments, and most computer labs. The Print and Copy Center will also be available to students for all types of printing and copying projects.

Safe Computing
NEVER give social security numbers, bank account numbers, passwords, password hints, user ids, user accounts to an unsolicited email (or phone call). Meredith College may send students a password to a Meredith College email account but will never ask for one. An email may pose as being from System Administrator or say Urgent - call 760-2323 instead.
Visiting web sites, sending email, and accessing Blackboard are essential and useful resources for Meredith College students and all require being on the internet. There are potential pitfalls, scams, tricks, phising attempts, programs, and other distractions that bad people attempt to spread everyday in order to attempt to steal identities, credit card numbers, victim addresses, shopping habits, manipulate your shopping choices, or just make life miserable.
