Summer Reading 2009

Would you like to meet the author of Unbowed:  A Memoir, our 2009 Summer Reading Program selection, when she visits Meredith on Thursday, October 1?  Submit an essay of up to two pages explaining why you would like to spend 30 minutes with Dr. Wangari Maathai.  The essay should demonstrate familiarity with the book and other accomplishments.  Each submission should be emailed as a Word attachment to Michael Novak  (novakm@meredith.edu) by  September 10.  The file name of each Word document should include the name of the student submitting it.

From those entries submitted, the Wallace Committee will select up to fifteen students for the honor of having time with this Nobel Laureate.    The winners will be notified by September 24 and should be able to arrange their schedules to meet with Dr. Maathai from 4:30-5:00 pm on Thursday, October 1.

The Wallace Committee looks forward to many entries and hopes that faculty, faculty advisors, student advisors and others will encourage students to write essays for consideration.

With thanks from the Lillian Parker Wallace Lecture Committee:  Anne Bryan, ’71; Tenzin Dekyi; Erin Lindquist; Katie Nagel; Michael Novak; Allen Page; and Jean Jackson, ’75, chair.

UnbowedMeredith College’s Summer Reading Program selection for 2009 is “Unbowed,” a memoir by Nobel laureate Wangari Maathai, who has been a trailblazer on behalf of women and the environment.

The Summer Reading Program was created to further enhance the academic climate on campus. Each year, the Summer Reading Program book is chosen to fit Meredith’s annual campus-wide theme. Maathai’s work and her life story embody Meredith’s 2009-10 campus theme "Catalysts for Change."

Nobel laureate Maathai will also deliver the 2009 Lillian Parker Wallace Lecture on October 1, 2009 at 7 p.m. in the McIver Amphitheater.
