Hartford Receives Alumni Achievement Award from UNC-CH
Meredith College President Maureen A. Hartford received the 2008 Alumni Achievement Award from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s School of Education. The award was presented on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2008.
The UNC-CH School of Education Alumni Achievement Award “recognizes exceptional achievement of an alumnus or alumna who personifies the School of Education’s commitment to support diverse and democratic communities in order to improve education in the state and nation for all children and the adults who care for them. Through exceptional accomplishments, this individual will have brought distinction to self and to alma mater.”
Hartford was named president of Meredith College on February 26, 1999, and officially assumed the duties of that position the following July 1. She is Meredith’s first female president.
Prior to her service at Meredith, Hartford served the University of Michigan as vice president for student affairs and also as a faculty member of the Center for the Study of Higher and Post-Secondary Education. Hartford has also served in senior administration positions at Washington State University, Case Western Reserve, the University of Arkansas, and the University of Maine.
A native of Charlotte, N.C., Hartford earned a B.A. in French and history and an M.A. in college teaching at UNC-Chapel Hill. Her doctorate in higher education administration is from the University of Arkansas.
Meredith College President Earns Humanitarian Award
Meredith College President Maureen A. Hartford received the inaugural Humanitarian Award as part of Women in Business Awards presented by “The Triangle Business Journal.” The award was announced during a celebration on August 6, 2008.
As an active champion for educational and community service initiatives, she worked with administration of former President Bill Clinton on the establishment of the Americorps program and was one of the original crafters of the “America Reads Challenge,” a national government campaign to challenge all Americans to help children learn to read. More recently, Hartford has served on the governing board for LeaderShape, a national organization that teaches ethical leadership skills to college students. Throughout the greater Triangle community, she continues to expand and actively support Meredith’s involvement in events benefiting the Triangle community. For the last eleven years, Meredith has hosted the Komen NC/Triangle Race for the Cure. Hartford also directed the establishment of MeredithREADS, a campus-wide effort that provides literacy tutoring to at-risk elementary and middle school children.
In 2002, Hartford was a recipient of a Women in Business Award. “The Triangle Business Journal” established the Women in Business Awards to honor women in various business categories who have proven to be dynamic and outstanding leaders with established track records of significant accomplishments in business and/or community service.
Meredith President Named “Woman Extraordinaire”
Meredith College President Maureen A. Hartford has been chosen by “Business Leader” magazine as one of the publication’s “Women Extraordinaire” of 2007.
Hartford is one of 10 women to receive this honor in 2007. The winners were celebrated at an awards luncheon on December 6, 2007, and are profiled in the magazine’s December issue.
Throughout her career in education, Hartford has led, educated, inspired and mentored young people. During her tenure as president of Meredith, one of the largest women’s colleges in the U.S., Hartford has led the College to record-breaking enrollment and fundraising success.
Under her leadership, Meredith’s endowment has increased from $55.8 million in 2001 to more than $88 million in 2007. Hartford successfully led the Campaign for Meredith, which raised more than $41 million in funding for scholarships and other initiatives, and was the largest campaign in the College’s history. The College also welcomed a record 464 first-year students in August 2007.
Hartford has actively supported education and community service initiatives on the national level. She worked with the Clinton administration on the establishment of the Americorps program.
More recently, Hartford has served on the governing board for LeaderShape, a national organization that teaches ethical leadership skills to college students. She was recently named to a four-year term on the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry. Hartford also serves as chair of the Marine Corps University’s Board of Visitors.

Meredith President Named Chair of Marine Corps University Board
Meredith College President Maureen Hartford has been named chair of the Marine Corps University Board of Visitors. Hartford was named a member of the Marine Corps University’s Board of Visitors in 2004, and reappointed in 2007.
As a member of the board, Hartford advises the commanding general of the Marine Corps Combat Development Command and the president of the Marine Corps University in education, doctrinal, budgetary, enrollment and research polices and programs. The mission of the Marine Corps University, which consists of eight institutions, including the Marine Corps War College, is to develop, implement and monitor the resident and distance learning professional military education policies and programs for all Marines, regular and reserve.

President Maureen Hartford Named to NCCBI Board of Directors
Meredith College President Maureen Hartford has been named to the Board of Directors for the North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry.
Hartford will begin a four-year term on April 1. With approximately 2,000 member companies of all types and sizes, North Carolina Citizens for Business and Industry is the state's largest business group. NCCBI's broad mandate is to improve the quality of life for all North Carolinians, a goal it pursues by working to safeguard the state's favorable business climate, by improving educational opportunities for everyone and by maintaining a clean, healthy environment.

Meredith President Inducted into YWCA Academy of Women

Meredith College President Maureen A. Hartford was inducted in the YWCA Academy of Women on Thursday, November 10. Hartford was honored in the Education category.
The Academy of Women is an annual awards event created in 1983 by the YWCA of the Greater Triangle to recognize the achievements of outstanding local women in the community. The YWCA Academy of Women selects and inducts women who demonstrate a commitment to the community and exemplify the YWCA mission of empowering women and eliminating racism.
In 1999, Hartford became the first woman to serve as president of Meredith College, the largest private college for women in the Southeast. During her tenure as president, Hartford has driven major initiatives to establish aggressive and achievable best practices in diversity, to teach students about caring engagement in their communities and to actively support women's leadership.
Prior to coming to Meredith, Hartford held senior and executive positions at the University of Michigan, Washington State University, Case Western Reserve, the University of Arkansas and the University of Miami. She has served on the national governing board for LeaderShape and work with the Clinton administration in the establishment of the Americorps Program.
Hartford has been honored with awards including The Business Journal's 2002 Women in Business award, the 2002 Distinguished Scholar Award from the N.C. College Personnel Association and the Woman of Achievement award from the General Federation of Woman's Clubs of North Carolina.
