Meredith College is known for many things—its beautiful, jewel-like campus, its academic rigor, its tenacity and ability to thrive as a women’s college, and its deep commitment to lasting values like integrity, service and leadership.
Ultimately, however, people are what truly define the College: the more than 18,000 alumnae who span the globe and bring their own unique brand of activism and leadership to their communities; the caring, committed faculty who are dedicated both to impeccable scholarship and to sharing their love of learning with those who attend Meredith; the staff who work tirelessly to make the College a supportive, nurturing environment and a well-rounded educational experience.
And, above all, Meredith is defined by the students themselves. Students whose interests and hobbies and careers and fashions may have changed dramatically over the 119 years since Meredith’s founding, but whose essence is surprisingly consistent.
Choosing the words that define Meredith wasn’t difficult. They were drawn directly from the mission of the College and they are evident in Meredith’s everyday life. A bigger challenge was selecting the few students featured here, for these values permeate each and every student’s experience at Meredith. And, of course, the process of defining Meredith is reciprocal—our students define us, and Meredith helps to define them, as well.
The students chosen to represent eight defining elements of Meredith are intended to serve as a window into the vibrancy and energy that sets our students apart. Their stories are both inspiring and reassuring to those who care about Meredith. They show us that if indeed our graduates are the future, we can rest assured that we are all in good hands. Truly, they are powerful agents of positive change.
