Meredith College to Commemorate World AIDS Day

Meredith College students have organized a weeklong series in an effort to commemorate World AIDS Day.
World AIDS Awareness Week, which will be held November 28-December 1, is sponsored by the Student Government Association's Unity Council.
Two panels of the AIDS Memorial Quilt will be on display at Meredith on November 30 from noon-9 p.m. and December 1 from 8 a.m. -8 p.m. in the Rotunda of Johnson Hall.
A highlight of the week will be a lecture by documentary filmmaker Rory Kennedy will be held on November 30 at 7 p.m. in Jones Auditorium. Kennedy will discuss "The Camera Doesn't Lie: Social Change Through Documentary Filmmaking."
Other plans include an HIV/AIDS awareness information table, viewing of Rory Kennedy's documentary "Pandemic: Facing AIDS," and a candlelight vigil on World AIDS Day.
The week's events lead up to a candlelight vigil on December 1, which is World AIDS Day. The vigil begins at sunset in front of Johnson Hall.
World AIDS Awareness Week Schedule of Events
Monday, Nov. 28
10 a.m. – 2 p.m.
HIV/AIDS Awareness Information Table, 1st Floor Cate Center
- A red ribbon banner will be available for students, faculty and staff to place notes sharing comments or names of people whose lives have been affected by HIV/AIDS.
- Local agencies will provide HIV/AIDS education.
6 p.m.
Viewing and Discussion of the Documentary "Pandemic: Facing AIDS," Kresge Auditorium
Tuesday, Nov. 29
Red Ribbon and AIDS Awareness T-shirt Day
- The campus community is asked to wear red or AIDS awareness T-shirts.
- Red ribbons will be available in Cate Center Lobby.
Wednesday, Nov. 30
AIDS Memorial Quilt on Display
Noon – 9 p.m. Public viewing hours
7 p.m. Lecture by Documentary Filmmaker Rory Kennedy, Jones Auditorium. Kennedy's lecture is the inaugural event in Meredith's new Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Presidential Lecture Series.
