Thank you for visiting Meredith Mathematics & Science Institutes!

In 2013 MMSI continues to offer quality, residential professional development opportunities that focus on important mathematics and science content for K through Middle School. The summer Institutes are designed for all classroom teachers, resource teachers, lead teachers, mathematics/science coordinators and supervisors.

This year, 2012-2013, the Common Core State Standards became the official mathematics curriculum in North Carolina, and we are pleased to offer content courses for K-8 mathematics and 3-5 science with an emphasis on the engineering part of STEM.  As MMSI 2013 continues to provide quality, residential professional development opportunities for all classroom teachers, resource teachers, and lead teachers, we also will offer a leadership course for mathematics coordinators, supervisors, and district lead teachers. There are grade-level specific mathematics courses for K through 8.  The K-8 grade level specific courses are adaptations of last year’s 2012 MMSI sessions and continue to emphasize critical content for each grade. There is a new 6-8 session for those who attended CCSSM at Meredith or in one of the regional TAP Math sessions. The new course offers advanced strategies for implementing CCSM with an emphasis on web resources.

As of May 15, 2013 we have added 6 more workshops.

Join us for two days of specific professional development that explores the critical areas for each grade. Participants will discuss the unique challenges for the grades, important instructional strategies, and ways to support student understanding of significant mathematical content. Opportunities for student engagement and achievement will become evident when classroom instruction stresses connectedness and coherence.

Science
Hands-On/Minds-On Science Engineering, in this science session for grades 3-5, participants will learn how to use inexpensive, hands-on/minds-on activities to successfully incorporate engineering principles and the Common Core Essential Standards into their Science curriculum.

Class size is limited, so consider organizing a school team to take advantage of the grade-level specific opportunities. The schedule is set so that individuals may attend the sessions for one or two grades.

Classes begin at 8:30 and will end at 3:45 each day. All materials and 5 meals are included in the registration fee.

Institute Highlights

Each Institute focuses on specific mathematics or science content, delving deeply into the content of "big ideas" that are important for the stated grades. Institutes include:
