Six years in the making, “Marching Once More,” is the story of veterans of World War II's infamous Battle of the Bulge who return to the battlefield 60 years later. Meredith College Associate Professor of History Greg Vitarbo served as a consultant for “Marching Once More.”

This one hour documentary, shot in Belgium and Luxembourg, follows their emotional 10-day journey back to the horrors of their youth, when Hitler launched a surprise attack on thin, often inexperienced American front lines in December, 1944, just when many thought the war in Europe was almost over. In the six weeks of brutal fighting that followed - during one of the worst winters anyone could remember - 19,000 Americans lost their lives. The veterans featured - who hail from all over the United States - tell of their experiences during this horrific fight and the impact the war had on their lives.

This is the third World War II documentary that Hughes has produced. Her documentary “North Carolina’s World War II Experience,” which premiered on UNC-TV on December 7, will be re-broadcast January 12 at 9 p.m. following the premiere of “Marching Once More.”

“The seeds of my love of history were planted during history classes at Meredith, where I realized the value of learning from our past,” Hughes said.
