Meredith College to Hold Chopin Competition The Meredith College Department of Music invites pre-college students to participate in a Chopin competition on February 23, 2010. Meredith’s Chopin Competition offers a top prize of $2,000. The second place winner will receive $1,000 and third place earns $750. The competition is part of Chopin 200, Meredith’s celebration of the Bicentennial of composer Frederic Chopin’s birth. Competitors will be chosen through a screening audition, via video recording or live audition. Finalists will be judged by distinguished international concert pianists Ann Schein and Walter Hautzig. The application fee is $50, which includes admission to all events in Meredith’s Chopin Festival, which is being held in conjunction with the competition, February 22-26, 2010. Eligibility: The competition is open to pre-college students age 15-19, as of January 18, 2010. Competition Repertoire: The applicant’s choice of solo piano music of Frederic Chopin. Eight minute minimum, 15 minute maximum. Screening Round Audition Repertoire: Screening round audition must include all repertoire to be performed in the competition, AND one other contrasting, non-Chopin selection of the applicant’s choice. Competition round repertoire will include Chopin piece only. Application Procedure: Applicants may arrange a live audition on the Meredith College campus to be held January 21-23, or may submit a DVD audition at the time the application is submitted. Applications must be postmarked by January 18, 2010.
