Stillwater Theatre to Present Staged Reading Stillwater Theatre Company, Meredith College’s professional theatre company-in-residence, will present a staged reading of “The Grinning Man” by Alex Smith on May 19-20. The reading will be held at 7:30 p.m. in Meredith’s Studio Theatre. The event is free and open to the public. In “The Grinning Man,” husband and wife Eliot and Gale are owners of The Phoenician, a successful exotic flower shop. When the play opens, they are awaiting the arrival of Theresa, a friend who is troubled, estranged; as they close shop for the day, they are visited by a mysterious (and menacing) customer, the Grinning Man. Who is this man? Why is he so disturbingly familiar? Secrets and lies, apparitions and mysteries.....the debut production of a nightmarish new work." Playwright Alex Smith, a Raleigh native and soon-to-be graduate of Clemson University, will be on hand to answer any questions that the audience might have as Stillwater Theatre Company readies the play for a full production that will open September 18.
