The lecture, which begins at 7 p.m. in Jones Auditorium, is part of Meredith’s annual Founders’ Day commemoration. The Corwin event marks the 100th Founders’ Day celebration in Meredith’s history. His lecture, “Planet in Peril: Environmental Threats of the 21st Century,” will focus on modern-day extinction and habitat exploitation occurring throughout the planet. Corwin will explore the challenges of conserving natural habitat and saving endangered species, and highlight contemporary success stories in conservation. This presentation is substantive and is best suited for an audience that is looking for an in-depth lecture on the environment and natural history. In addition to the public lecture, Meredith will hold a campus reception for Jeff Corwin at 3:30 p.m. in Kresge Auditorium. This event is an opportunity for students to ask questions in a small, informal setting. Animal Planet audiences best know Corwin as host of “The Jeff Corwin Experience,” which he has hosted and executive produced since 2000. The series reaches over 13 million viewers in the United States and is viewed in more than 70 countries worldwide. Corwin has been working for the conservation of endangered species and ecosystems around the world since he was a teenager. He has Bachelor of Science degrees in biology and anthropology from Bridgewater State College, and an M.S. in wildlife and fisheries conservation from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina Presidential Lecture Series at Meredith College stimulates and enhances the intellectual and academic climate at Meredith College and the broader community. Through this lecture series, which was established in 2005, Meredith promotes intellectually rigorous discussions that revolve around the College’s annual theme, which for 2008-09 is “Sustaining Our Environment: Developing Our Greenprint.” For more information, visit www.meredith.edu/campus-theme.
