Hello, my name is Brandon Armstrong. I am of African-American descent. I am a University of South Carolina Sumter student majoring in Biology. After obtaining my Biology degree, I plan to take the veterinary exams and attend the University of Florida for my Veterinarian degree. I am the Vice-president of the University of South Carolina Chapter of P.A.W.S. (Protect Animals with Shelter). I am also a member of the local FFA chapter (Future Farmers of America). I have a Dalmatian that I love very much and my own Quarter horse named Champ. I would love to be a veterinarian to improve the life span of animals. My love for animals started when I was little and having to spend time at my grandparent’s home. They had a number of animals ranging from chickens to horses to cows. I would help in the daily chores of feeding the animals and cleaning out their cages. To me it didn’t seem like chores because I love the animals as they have their own individual personalities.

Hello, my name is Kashawna James. I am a nineteen year old freshman at the University of South Carolina Sumter. I am majoring in Biology but I want to also minor in Spanish. I chose Biology as a major because it is fun, exciting and very inquiry based. You never know what would happen next. After graduating from the university with my Bachelor’s degree in Biology, I plan to attend medical school to study Pediatrics. Ever since I was young, I always wanted to aid or help others, especially infants, children, and adolescences. I have a dying affection for the health of innocent children who can’t help themselves, those that are in poverty, struggling with birth defects, or coping uncontrollably with adoptions. I want to be the one that brightens that child’s life and ensure a safety future and prosperous life. I also want to travel to far away countries around the world and help those families suffering from disease, hunger, and the lack of proper healthcare. I would like to be known as the first Pediatrics doctor to cure HIV/AIDS and cancer, so that the world wouldn’t have to suffer from these dreadful conditions and cause death, most of all our loved ones.

Unfortunately, I am a shy girl from a little town called Summerton in the lower part of South Carolina, better yet known as the deep south or the country. If you’re looking at a map, I’m just above Georgia and below North Carolina. There’s nothing much to do here but go to school and work. I am trying to volunteer at a local hospital or work at a daycare to help me in my career goal. However, I really enjoy learning much about Africa. I am African American and I am taking an African American History course to learn more about the culture and social life of different African societies. What fascinates me the most is that my mom even collects African figurines and wild animals found within the Sahara desert. They are the most beautiful works of art that I’ve ever seen. I love it. To tell you the truth I really love everything about Africa and hopefully one day I would finally get to travel and experience what it’s really like.

Hi, my name is Justin Reynolds. I’m 21 years old and a senior Biology Major/Chemistry Minor at the University of South Carolina. I will be traveling to Kenya this summer for a few weeks to gain an understanding on how African people view and understand HIV/AIDS and how it works. I along with my advisor (professor) am visiting your University in Kenya and some of the local HIV/AIDS clinics. Our goal is to learn more about HIV/AIDS on a global scale and learn about the beliefs and attitudes towards AIDS of Kenyans and compare it to the United States. I am really looking forward to this trip and being able to meet you all at at Kenyatta University.

As for a little information about me, well I grew up in Sumter, South Carolina which is part of the Southeastern United States and 1 hr from Columbia, the capital of South Carolina. Sumter is where the University of South Carolina Sumter is located. My dad was in the US Air Force and I have spent most of my life in or around Air Force Bases. This was good in a sense that I always had a chance to make new friends that had very different backgrounds than me. I plan to graduate this May with my Bachelor of Science in Biology and I have applied to graduate schools for an M.S. degree in Biology and am being interviewed at some of them. My ultimate goal is to attain my PhD in a molecular biology field. I am most interested in virology/immunology, and hopefully I can get involved in research in that field.

I am also engaged to a wonderful woman and we have plans to get married sometime this year. We haven’t made exact plans yet because we don’t know where we are going to get accepted into graduate school. Well that is about it for me. I don’t have much time left after my classes, work, and my research project, but I do enjoy collecting PEZ dispensers. If you don’t know what they are, you will after you meet me….I’m sure I will bring a few.

Hello, my name is Brittney Smith and I attend the University of South Carolina Sumter. I am currently taking an independent study course on HIV/AIDS. During this course I will be working on conducting survey questions pertaining to HIV/ AIDS for my professor, Dr. Pearl Fernandes and another student who plan to visit Kenya in May. Helping with lab modules pertaining to HIV/AIDS will also be a part of my study. I am majoring in Biology but am also applying to Nursing school. Once I graduate with a Biology degree, I plan to go to Nurse Practitioner School and specialize in Women’s Health. I also work part time as a Pharmacy Technician. Whenever I have time outside of school and work, I enjoy horse back riding and scuba diving.
