Jambo! My name is Annabelle Launder and I am a Senior Biology Pre-Health at Meredith College. I am also currently taking an EMT class in order to accumulate clinical experience before applying for a Masters Degree as a Physician Assistant.
My deepest loves and inspiration are my husband, my two kids, and Medicine.
I am originally from Caracas, Venezuela where I earned an Associates degree in marketing, but I had always wanted to live in the United States as well as going to Medicine School, so when I was still very young I re-arranged my life, took my daughter with me, and grabbed a great opportunity of moving here (where I have been for the past nine years).
I firmly believe that if you have the chance of being in a great place, with great opportunities, then you need to do something equally great for others. That is one of many reasons I want to become a doctor. I want to make a difference and help others, I want to help to prevent and to cure diseases, and my long term goal is to become a surgeon.
I am working really hard trying to go next summer to Kenya for a field research; I want to visit this country, which reminds me of mine. Almost like Venezuela, Kenya is in so much need of resources and I think that I can give a service and help in some way, I want to learn their culture, their language, and their economical conditions and how they relate to the spread of the HIV virus. I also want to do my best helping with preventive education for HIV/AIDS, and collect as much information as possible that will be of importance in the cure of the disease in the future.
I know I have great goals, and I also know that I am a non traditional student with many responsibilities beside school, but the way I see it: "If I am going to be 40 some day anyway, I better get there doing something that I truly love and that can also make a difference helping others."
