Am I eligible for the M.Ed. program?
You are eligible to apply for admission into the program if you have a baccalaureate degree and a teaching license. Ninety-eight percent of students in the program are currenty employed as K–12 teachers.
What are the requirements for the program?
Depending on the specialty area you choose (elementary education, ESL, reading, special education, or AIG), credits may vary from 30–36 credit hours. On completion of the program you earn a North Carolina “M” license.
How long will it take to complete the program?
You can complete the M.Ed. program in as few as two or as many as six years. Typically, students complete the M.Ed. program in three years.
When are classes held?
Classes are held one night a week for three hours between the hours of 4:30–8 p.m. for 15 weeks in the fall and spring semesters. Summer course schedules vary to accommodate teachers in year round schools. The M.Ed. with AIG is hybrid, with 70% coursework on-line, 30% coursework on-campus.
Can I afford private graduate college tuition?
Yes, Meredith College’s graduate tuition is $420 per credit hour which is comparable with area private and public colleges and universities. Meredith has a $60 graduate student fees for the M.Ed. program. Also, if you qualify there is teacher tuition assistance and scholarships. Please see financial assistance for more information.
Do I need to take an entrance exam for admission into the program?
To be fully admitted into the graduate education program you will need to successfully complete either the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) or the MAT (Miller Analogies Test). However, at Meredith College it is possible to take 6 credit hours or two courses as a PBS (Post-Baccalaureate Student) which will count toward your Master’s degree before taking the GRE or MAT.
As a Post-Baccalaureate student am I eligible for Teacher Tuition Assistance?
No, you must be fully enrolled in the Master of Education program to qualify for Teacher Tuition Assistance.
What if I’m only seeking add-on licensure in ESL, reading, or special education?
You can elect to take the course work for add-on licensure in the areas of ESL, reading, and special education. Application requirements are the same as those for the master’s program and the course work can be applied to a master’s program if you choose later to earn your M.Ed. at Meredith.
Can I take master’s level classes for continuing education or license renewal?
If you’re looking to renew a teaching license by taking master’s level course work, you can take classes as a non-degree student. Two classes or six credit hours of course work can later be applied to the M.Ed. program if you choose to apply and are accepted. It is the responsibility of students to secure approval from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction prior to pursuing course work.
What if I am seeking my first teaching license?
The master of education program is for those who have already met the requirements for the initial teaching license.
