The Meredith College Master of Arts in teaching program serves people who have bachelor's degrees in disciplines other than education, who are committed to becoming teachers, and who are seeking initial N.C. teaching licensure in elementary education for K-6, English as a second language (ESL) for K-12, or special education (general curriculum) for K-12. The goal of the program is to prepare highly qualified beginning teachers who have the skills to teach all students, can collaborate with professionals and families, are well-versed in the content areas, and understand their roles in local, national and global contexts.
The program includes both professional studies courses and courses in the areas of elementary education, ESL education, or special education. The areas of concentration enable you to develop expertise in an instructional area. A concentration in a licensure area will result in a master's level (M-level) license in that area.
During your last semester of study, you must complete a semester-long practicum by student teaching in the public schools. You also will complete a professional reflections portfolio. Before applying for licensure, you must have earned a minimum score on PRAXIS II in your licensure area.
Admission to the program is during the fall semester only to both the full-time and part-time tracks. Courses are scheduled in the evenings (5 - 7:50 p.m.) on campus.
