Federal Work Study Program

The Federal Work-Study program is a need-based program of financial aid providing students an opportunity to work part-time in an approved on-campus job or community service position. It provides an excellent opportunity for students to earn money and obtain transferable skills, all while attending Meredith College. In order to be eligible for Federal Work-Study, a student must be enrolled at least half-time and have documented need. “Need” is calculated based on the information submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Federal Work-study positions are considered real jobs. The term “work-study” does not mean that the student may study while on the job. Rather, it means that the student will work in a professional environment to earn the funds necessary to study at Meredith College.

Almost every department at Meredith College employs students part-time. These jobs offer students work related to their skills, academic or career fields, and experiences or interests. Job duties range from those demanding special research skills to those demanding only the willingness to work. Meredith College offices and Raleigh area businesses list part-time positions with the Office of Financial Assistance.

How will I be paid?

Once you have accepted a position, you must complete and sign a contract with your supervisor. You must also complete the I-9 hiring form, the state tax withholding form, and the federal tax withholding form. These forms are available in the Human Resources Department on the first floor of Park. For the I-9 form, you will need to bring your driver’s license and Social Security card or other qualifying documents.

You will be paid on the 10th day of each month for the hours worked in the prior month pay period. Federal work-study funds are not applied to your student account. How much can I earn?

Your Award Letter indicates the maximum amount you may earn in a work-study job during the academic year. Jobs have variable pay rates. The initial pay rate is $6.55 per hour. Wage increases are determined by your department and are based upon work performance and increased responsibilities.

The typical award is $1,300 per year. If you receive a new scholarship or grant, your work-study award may be reduced or canceled. You should review carefully any revised award letter sent to you to see if your work-study award amount has changed. You should immediately report any reduction in your work-study award amount to your employer.

Students work an average of 10 to 15 hours per week. You will arrange a work schedule with your supervisor that accommodates your classes while also meeting the needs of the department. During a semester, you may typically begin work during the first full week of classes and cease work on the last day of classes. Work during periods of non-enrollment, such as holidays, is at the discretion of the department and the Financial Aid Office.

If I decline the Federal Work-Study (FWS) offer or don't get a FWS job, can my grants or loans be increased?

If a dependent student declines FWS, parents may request an increase in their Parent PLUS loan. Typically, independent students will see no change in financial aid eligibility but may contact a financial aid counselor for a revised eligibility assessment.

I was eligible for Federal Work-Study (FWS) last year, why am I not this year? What can I do? Why am I not eligible?

Eligibility for all Title IV programs can change from year to year, thus creating the requirement to file a FAFSA each year. Eligibility/non-eligibility can be the result of a change in any number of variables: number of household members in college, parents’ and students’ income, untaxed income, assets, etc. In some cases, the change in eligibility may take place with the actual financial aid award. For example, the availability of other need based aid increases, such as the subsidized Stafford loan amount and once this increase takes place; there isn’t enough “need” in the award package for other need based aid such as FWS. In these cases, students may contact Financial Assistance to inquire about the possibility of reducing the subsidized Stafford loan amount and replacing it with FWS.

Can I have two on-campus jobs? How many hours can I work?

A student can have several on campus jobs, but between all of these positions, the student cannot exceed 20 hours per week. This policy is in place to reinforce “academics first” for student employees. For international students, it is a federal regulation and violation of exceeding 20-hour maximum could result in deportation.

Can I change jobs during the year?

You are encouraged to remain in your position for one academic year. As with any job, periods of short employment may raise questions for a future employer. Your work-study job is an opportunity to establish a good work record for your resume, along with a favorable letter of reference. If you are experiencing any difficulties in your work situation, you are encouraged to discuss your concerns with your employer. If you decide to quit your job, you should give your employer at least two weeks’ notice of resignation.

If you have conflicts that cannot be resolved to your satisfaction after working with your supervisor, you may contact the Assistant Director of Financial Aid for Scholarships and Campus Work.

Should I notify the Office of Financial Assistance if I decide to decline my work-study award?

Yes.  Please indicate on your Award Notification Worksheet if you decide not to work so the funds can be given to another eligible student who wants to participate.
