International affairs scholar Anne-Marie Slaughter will serve as the speaker for Meredith’s 2013 Commencement ceremony. Meredith will hold commencement exercises on Saturday, May 11, 2013, at 7 p.m. in J.S. Dorton Arena.

Slaughter was recently named the president of the New America Foundation. She will assume this new role on September 1, 2013. The New America Foundation is a nonprofit, nonpartisan public policy institute that invests in new thinkers and new ideas to address the next generation of challenges facing the United States. New America emphasizes work that is responsive to the changing conditions and problems of the 21st century. Slaughter is currently a member of the faculty at Princeton University, where she serves at the Bert G. Kerstetter, ’66, University Professor of Politics and International Affairs.

Slaughter was the first woman to serve as director of policy planning for the United States Department of State. Upon leaving the State Department in 2011 she received the Secretary’s Distinguished Service Award for her work leading the Quadrennial Diplomacy and Development Review, as well as a Meritorious Honor Award from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and a Joint Civilian Service Commendation Award from the Supreme Allied Commander for Europe.

Slaughter has written or edited six books, including “A New World Order” (2004) and “The Idea That Is America: Keeping Faith With Our Values In A Dangerous World” (2007), and over 100 scholarly articles. She is a frequent contributor to both mainstream and new media, publishing op-eds in major newspapers, magazines and blogs around the world and curating foreign policy news for more than 40,000 followers on Twitter.

Slaughter holds a B.A. from Princeton University, an M.Phil and D.Phil in international relations from Oxford University, and a J.D. from Harvard University.
