Documentary Filmmaker Camden Watts, ’03, will screen her film “Abandoned Allies” at Meredith College on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, at 7 p.m. in Carswell Hall.

“Abandoned Allies” is about the Montagnards who served as American allies during the Vietnam War. It explores the history of these tribal people, how they supported the U.S. Special Forces during the war, and what has happened since then. Now, more than 40 years after the war ended, both American and Montagnard soldiers open up about what took place and how it will affect future generations.

Watts spent four years on this project, from its inception to its completion in 2012. Watts traveled throughout North Carolina, as well as Illinois, Maryland, Virginia, and Wisconsin to interview subject matter experts. Over the course of four years, more than 40 volunteers supported the filmmakers–helping with production, post-production, promotion, and more. Production of “Abandoned Allies” took about two years, and post production took about two and a half years.

The screening at Meredith will be followed by a panel discussion featuring people from the film and the Montagnard community. The event will be of particular interest to those interested in the history of the film’s subject, the craft of filmmaking, and the accomplishments of recent Meredith graduates.

Camden Watts is a 2003 graduate of Meredith College, where she majored in studio art, minored in professional communications and concentrated in graphic design.
