Basic Women’s Safety and Self-Defense - 0544
This course will give women the basic skills necessary to minimize their vulnerability to sexual assault. Each class will include both a classroom and a hands-on component. Students will learn to recognize and avoid common tactics used by sexual predators. During the second half of each class, students will learn and practice physical skills that can be used to defeat an attacker. The course concludes with a padded assailant encounter that will allow students to try out their new skills at full force against a mock attacker.

Boot Camp with Lawana - DBOOT
This course combines calisthenics, strength training, cardio and fun! Participants will gain strength and cardio endurance. Exercises are appropriate for all fitness levels .

Chi Kung: Six Healing Sounds - 0550
The Six Healing Sounds workshop will focus on simple movement warm-ups followed by sitting meditations. The Chi-Kung warm-up will emphasize breathing and the circulation of chi throughout the body. The sitting meditations will feature easy vocal sounds designed to clear one of negative energy. The Chi Kung warm-ups and Six Healing Sounds aid self-healing and relaxation.

Creating a Healthy Mind and Body - 0549
Join Heather Brewer, licensed clinical social worker and American College of Sports Medicine certified Exercise Specialist, to learn how to care for your physical and emotional health. Understand the mind/body connection, learn techniques to manage stress and maintain a more positive attitude, and learn how to begin a safe exercise program. At the conclusion of this class, you will have developed an individual self-care plan to integrate what you have learned into your daily life. The class will be a combination of lecture, group discussion and low intensity activities.

Mindfulness Meditation - 1044
Mindfulness helps us experience our bodies, emotions and thoughts with greater clarity and balance. This frees our mind from conditioned patterns of self-centeredness and negativity, opening our hearts to deeper wisdom, compassion and forgiveness. Mindfulness is an ancient meditation practice that is suitable for those of any religion or spiritual persuasion. We will include sitting, standing and walking meditation and place emphasis on how to bring this practice into the context of our daily lives. Recommended text is “Mindfulness in Plain English” by Bhante Gunaratana, ISBN # 0-8-6171- 064-9. If you wish, bring a bag lunch and practice mindfulness of eating. Anyone wanting to sit on the floor should bring a folded blanket and cushion. Chairs are provided.

Zumba - DZUM
Zumba fuses Latin rhythms and easy to follow dance steps to create a dynamic fitness program. The routines feature segments of traditional Latin dances such as salsa, meringue, bachata and tango. This course will add Brazilian, African, belly dance, hip hop and cardio kick boxing. Add some Latin flavor and international zest into the mix and you’ve got Zumba.
