Avenging Angels End Run at USA South Tournament
Burlington, N.C. - Meredith ended their USA South tournament run with a 8-1 loss to Christopher Newport. On Friday, Meredith defeated crosstown rival Peace College 9-0 on Friday to move to the semifinal round.
Senior Meredith Roberson was named to the USA South Womens Tennis All Tournament Team with her perfect singles record in the tournament.
Meredith finishes the season with its second straight 14-win season under Head Coach Kelly Weaver. In their first season in the USA South conference the Avenging Angels finished third.

Meredith Tennis Places Members on USA South Teams



Fayetteville, N.C. - The Meredith tennis team placed four players on the USA South All-Conference teams.
Senior Morgan Martin (Hilton Head, S.C./ Heritage Academy) earned first team honors. Martin played in the #1 position in singles and doubles. She was undefeated in doubles conference play.
Senior Meredith Roberson (Mechanicsville, Va./ Atlee) and sophomore Kathryn Maples (Carthage, N.C./ O'Neal School) were both named to the second team. Roberson was paired up with Martin in doubles and was undefeated in conference play.Maples was also named to be Meredith's representative on the All Sportsmanship team.
Sophomore Amanda Bitler (Raleigh, N.C./ Cardinal Gibbons) was named to the Honorable Mention team. Bitler was undefeated during singles conference play in the #5 position.

Seniors Finish Off Panthers in Style
Raleigh, N.C. - Meredith finished off the Ferrum Panthers, winning 9-0. Seniors Meredith Roberson and Sydney Williford were celebrated in a pregame ceremony, then took it out on the Panthers.
Roberson won her #2 singles match 6-0, 6-0 while Williford won her #4 singles match with the same 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Both Roberson and Williford won their doubles matches as well, with Williford paired up with Kathryn Maples to win #1 doubles 8-2. Roberson and Morgan Martin continued their dominance on the season, winning 8-0 and going perfect in the USA South.
Meredith next waits to play in the USA South tournament on Friday April 18 in Burlington, N.C.
Avenging Angels Tame Pacers
Raleigh, N.C. - Meredith continued their dominance over Peace on the tennis court, sweeping them 9-0.
The doubles teams started things off, only losing one game. The #1 doubles team of Sydney Williford and Kathryn Maples won their matches 8-1, while #2 Meredith Roberson/Morgan Martin and #3 Cuyler Wells and Caitlin Dillion won by a score of 8-0. Roberson and Martin have won nine straight doubles matches.
Meredith was led by #1 singles Morgan Martin and her 6-2, 6-0 victory. The Avenging Angels only gave up four games in singles, with sweeps by Roberson, Maples, Bitler and Wells. Williford had a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the #4 position.
Meredith next hosts Ferrum on Friday at 3:30 pm for Senior Day.
Avenging Angels Sweep Cougars
Danville, Va. - Meredith (11-5, 5-2 USA South) continued their winning ways in sweeping Averett 9-0. The Avenging Angels only lost two games in the whole match.
Meredith next hosts crosstown rival and USA South conference foe Peace on Wednesday at 3:30 pm.
Avenging Angels Get Pride
Raleigh, N.C. - Meredith defeated Greensboro in a conference match up, downing the Pride 6-3. With the win, Meredith moves to 10-5 on the year and 4-2 in the USA South. The games were moved indoors to the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center at N.C. State due to rain.
The doubles teams took control winning 2-1. The combinations of Morgan Martin/Meredith Roberson and Cuyler Wells/Caitlin Dillon earned the victories.
Meredith went on to take 4 of the 6 singles matches to secure the win. Roberson won 6-1, 6-0 in the #2 position while Maples took the #3 with a 6-2, 7-5 score. Amanda Bitler and Cuyler Wells both swept their matches, 6-0, 6-0.
With the wins, senior Meredith Roberson won in both singles and doubles matches.
Meredith next travels to Averett on Sunday in a conference match-up. The Avenging Angels then finish up their regular season on Wednesday hosting Peace in a "Think Pink" match and on Saturday against Ferrum for senior day.
Thursday was also the first time that tennis has been web cast. The archived broadcast will be available on the Meredith Broadcast web page.
Meredith Takes CNU to the Limit
Newport News, Va. - Meredith (9-5, 3-2 USA South) took USA South leader Christopher Newport (14-0, 4-0 USA South) to the limit, falling 5-4. CNU's No. 2 player Frannie Shivar, finished a 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Meredith Roberson just moments after the Avenging Angels had rallied to tie the team score at 4-4.
Meredith gained singles wins from Kathryn Maples, Amanda Bitler and Cuyler Wells. The double team of Morgan Martin and Meredith Roberson took the #2 doubles spot.
Due to rain and the availability of indoor courts, the match began shortly after 1:00 p.m. with three doubles matches and CNU held a 2-1 advantage. Singles play resumed more than six hours later, at about 8:30 p.m., when more courts became open.
Meredith next hosts Greensboro on Tuesday, April 1 at 3:30 pm. The match will be web cast.
Avenging Angels Sweep Hornets
Winchester, Va. - Meredith (9-4, 3-1 USA South) defeated Shenandoah in a 9-0 sweep. The doubles teams took care of business, gaining all three sets. Then in singles, the Avenging Angels continued their domination taking all of the matches in straight sets.
Meredith next travels to Christopher Newport on Sunday.
Meredith Drops First Conference Match
Fayetteville, N.C. - Meredith (8-4, 2-1 USA South) lost their first conference match, falling 7-2 at Methodist.
Meredith won one of the doubles matches with Morgan Martin and Meredith Roberson getting the win. The singles matches for Meredith was led by Amanda Bitler winning in 3 sets.
Meredith next travels to Shenandoah on Saturday and Christopher Newport on Sunday.
Meredith Tennis Avenges NCAA Loss
The Meredith Avenging Angels started out strong in doubles, clinching two out of three doubles to enter singles ahead 2-1. After being behind, both #1 and #2 doubles pulled ahead 6-5 before closing out their matches 8-5 to give Meredith the lead and momentum going into singles. Both teams continued to play aggressive and focused during the key points in the match, which made the difference.
At #1 singles, Morgan Martin grinded out a tough first set winning 6-4 before closing out the second set 6-1 against Riley Prescott. Senior Meredith Roberson followed suit, and fought from behind to secure her first set 6-4 before winning her second set 6-1 against Amanda Thomley. Kathryn Maples secured the win against Huntingdon at #3 singles but not without a fight. After winning the first set 6-3 Maples trailed in most of the second set before getting behind 5-1 in the second set tiebreaker. Maples rose to the occasion and fought back to win the second set tiebreaker 7-5 against Kristi McDaniel to clinch the match for Meredith. Shortly after Maples’ victory Senior Sydney Williford prevailed in a thriller at #4 singles, defeating Hannahlee Dickinson 7-5, 6-7(2), 10-2. The final win for the Avenging Angels came from Amanda Bitler who defeated Nicole Weldon 8-3 at #5.
“The team was gearing up for this match all season after falling to Huntingdon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament last Spring” Coach Weaver said. “I am very proud of the way they fought out there, especially from behind, and hope that this gives them extra momentum to carry with them these final weeks of conference play.”
Meredith travels to Methodist this Wednesday to take on Methodist University.
Meredith Wins First USA South Home Match

Raleigh, N.C. - Meredith (7-3, 2-0 USA South) defeated their second USA South Conference opponent of the week and first ever at home, downing Mary Baldwin 9-0. Morgan Martin led the way in the #1 singles position. Kathryn Maples, Amanda Bilter, Caitlin Dillon, and Molly Parks all won their singles matches.
The Avenging Angels did not lose more than one game in every set in sweeping the Fighting Squirrels. Meredith won the bottom position in singles and doubles by default.
Meredith next hosts a non-conference match against Huntington on Monday at 5 p.m. These two teams last met in the 2007 NCAA Tournament.

Meredith Tennis Gains First USA South Win
Rocky Mount, N.C. - Meredith gained its first USA South win as they traveled to N.C. Wesleyan winning 9-0. The doubles teams got the momentum going with #1 pairing of Kathryn Maples/Sydney Williford winning 8-2, while Morgan Martin/Meredith Roberson and Molly Parks/Caitlin Dillion both won 8-0.
With singles wins by Maples, Williford, Dillon, Molly Parks, and Zannah Webster, producing five out of the six singles matches were won by a 6-0, 6-0 score. Martin won the number one singles position with a 6-4, 6-2 victory.
Meredith next hosts their first USA South match when Mary Baldwin comes to town on Friday.
Meredith Falls to Pfeiffer
Wilimington, N.C. - The Meredith tennis team fell to Division II Pfeiffer 6-3 in a match held at UNC-Wilmington. The Avenging Angels were led by Kathryn Maples who won in both of her matches.
Meredith next travels to N.C. Wesleyan on Tuesday in their first USA South Conference match, then come home Friday to host Mary Baldwin.
Meredith Sweeps Away Competition in Hilton Head
Hilton Head, S.C. - The Meredith (5-2) tennis team came back from a 3-0 doubles play deficit to take the match 5-4 from Elizabethtown (Pa.). Meredith dominated in singles, winning five of six matches.
With the match tied at 4-4, the #4 singles match up between Amanda Bitler and Minke Albers was stopped due to rain and continued the next morning. Bitler finished up the last set 6-4 to seal the win for the Avenging Angels.
Meredith finished the trip to Hilton Head 3-0 with the win over Elizabethtown, plus additional wins over Roanoke 9-0 and Debuque (Iowa) 8-1.
Meredith has the week off and next travels to UNC-Wilmington to take on Pfeiffer College on March 12.
Meredith Rolls Over Peace
Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith tennis team shut out Peace 9-0. Meredith played with a younger lineup in defeating the Pacers.
Sophomore Kathryn Maples led the way playing in the number one singles and doubles team. Amanda Bitler and Caitlin Dillion moved up in the lineup. Freshman Cuyler Wells moved to the fourth position while Molly Parks and Zannah Webster made their first singles starts.
Meredith next heads to Hilton Head, S.C. to play three matches in three days.
Tennis Falls in Two Matches at Mary Washington
Fredericksburg, Va. - Meredith fell in a close match to Salisbury 5-4. The Avenging Angels dropped two of three doubles matches to start the match. A split in the singles matches was not enough to gain the win.
Meredith dropped their second match of the day, falling to #6 ranked Mary Washington, 9-0.
Meredith next plays at Peace in a non-conference match on Thursday at 3:30 pm.

Tennis Sweeps Spelman 
Raleigh, N.C. - Meredith defeated Spelman 9-0 in the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on North Carolina State University. The doubles teams set the pace winning all three matches. The single matches did not have much trouble either winning them all by a wide margin.
Meredith next travels to Fredericksburg, Va. to take on Salisbury (Md.) and Mary Washington on Sunday.
Tennis Match Against Spelman Moved Indoors
Raleigh, N.C. - Due to the inclement weather, Friday's tennis match against Spelman has been moved indoors. The match will take place at 6:30 pm in the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center on North Carolina State University.
Meredith 2008 Tennis Preview
Raleigh, N.C. - The 2007 season was one of the best in Meredith’s history with a 14-4 record and a NCAA tournament bid. The Avenging Angels had strong showings in all three fall tournaments, and plan to continue developing and improving in order to be a top contender in the USA South Athletic Conference.
With all starters returning from the 2007 season and a deep incoming freshman class, Weaver believes that this year’s team has incredible potential.

USA South 2008 Preseason Women's Tennis Poll Released
Fayetteville, N.C. - Christopher Newport University and Methodist University each received the same amount of votes to sit atop the 2008 USA South Athletic Conference women's tennis preseason coaches' poll. Last spring, the Monarchs captured their first USA South Tournament Championship by defeating the Captains in the finals. The Captains ended the Monarchs run of six consecutive regular season titles by capturing the program's second-ever championship.
USA South newcomer, Meredith College, finished third in the balloting with 62 points while Shenandoah University, who finished third in the Conference last season, placed fourth in the poll with 56 points. Rounding out the top-half of the poll was Greensboro College with 51 points.
The 2008 USA South Women's Tennis Tournament will once again be played at the Burlington Tennis Center in Burlington, N.C. on April 18-20.
The Avenging Angels open up their season hosting Spelman on February 22 at 3:30 pm.

Avenging Angels Show Their Grit in Methodist Invitational
Fayetteville, N.C. - Freshman Molly Parks teamed with Sophomore Amanda Bitler and finished second in the B Flight of the Methodist University Invitational. This was the first time Parks paired with Bitler, and her aggressive net play led the duo throughout the weekend to beat two Division II doubles teams Pfeiffer and UNC-Pembroke. Parks also won her first round singles match against LeJacqueyln Artis from Fayetteville State.
Morgan Martin played at the top of her game at the Methodist University
Invitational and bounced back to win the A Flight Singles Consolation bracket. She defeated Ines Nieves from Fayeteville State, who was the number one seed in the A Flight Singles Draw. Martin also paired with Meredith Roberson to win the A Flight Doubles consolation, beating Methodist University duo Bull/Flaherety 8-6 in the finals.
Sydney Williford pulled out a big win against Christian Minnick from UNC-Pembroke 4-6, 6-3, 10-3 in the B Flight consolation. Williford and Kathryn Maples beat Bull/Flaherty from Methodist University 8-6 revenging their previous match in the Meredith Invitational. LeeAnna Outlaw won the C Flight Singles consolation.
The tennis team completes their fall season and now gets ready to start the spring season in February playing Salisbury and Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va.
Meredith Hosts Invitational
Raleigh, N.C. – The Meredith College tennis team hosted the Meredith Invitational the weekend of September 15-16. Players from USA South athletic conference members Peace and Methodist joined Meredith. Scores for the event can be found here.

Fall Tennis Season Starts for Avenging Angels
Raleigh, N.C. - The Meredith College tennis team starts their fall season over the weekend of September 14-16 at the Meredith Invitiational Tournament at Cary Tennis Park. Players from USA South athletic conference members Peace and Methodist will be joining Meredith.

Meredith Tennis Finishes Season
at the NCAAs
Sewanee, Tenn. - The Meredith College Angels (14-4) played a tough match against Huntingdon College in the first round of the NCAA tournament in Sewanee, Tenn. The Angels dropped the match 5-2. The doubles for Huntington won 2-1 and it was too big of difference to make up for singles matches.
This year under the direction of first year coach Kelly Weaver, the team is back on the path of success. She turned around a team that finished last season with a losing record to one that gained 14 wins and only 3 losses this season. The last NCAA bid for the tennis team was in 2001.
This is the second NCAA bid (Soccer and Tennis) for the Meredith College athletics department this year. The last time the Angels had two teams (Basketball and Tennis) in the NCAA tournament during the same year was in 2001.
