Many a time, our society appears like moths to the flames of misery and heartbreak, yet we don’t wish to look beneath the surface – afraid of vulnerability. Within my work, I have ventured to explore a sense of vulnerability and the loss of innocence that comes with introspection, self-discovery, and experience. Ultimately, I’m interested in the impact that media and technology have on the experience of tragedy and how it may dramatically influence the way we grow, think, mature, and see the world around us.
I often choose imagery that can appear innocent and beautiful at first glance – like origami cranes or children’s wooden letter blocks. However, I incorporate subtle hidden messages that hint at a darker undertone, which is often seen pure and untainted through the eyes of a child, but may have more complex meaning when read by an experienced eye. The subversive delivery of these small, but powerful messages creates a certain tension between the media – soft, delicate, and controlled, and my concepts – sorrow, tragedy, and darkness. By creating this discord I wish to push my viewers to look beyond the obvious and apply their experiences and pasts to make new meaning and understanding that creates an avenue for self-inspection and inner reflection. I feel this is the utmost important part of art – creating a “conversation” or exchange with an audience.
