Artist Statement I love graphic design because of the way it can instantly communicate a message through a single visual image. I first realized my passion for graphic design as a teenager when I flipped through an issue of Surfing magazine. The combination of beautiful photography, interesting graphics, and innovative use of typography amazed me and sparked my imagination. Anyone can learn how to become competent in the design software but creativity is a skill that can’t be taught. I would say that my strongest asset as a graphic designer is my creative imagination. My mind never stops dreaming of new ideas, and I always strive to create what has never been done before. I have lived near the beach my entire life, and my art has been heavily influenced by the ocean and the culture of surfing. That culture has inspired my art and created a consistency across my body of work in the colors and shapes I use. For example, my art is always very active because of my use of spiral and swirls that remind me of ocean waves. However, as a graphic designer I always try to find a balance between infusing my personal style into my work and pleasing the client. I also strive to stay true to my ethical beliefs and my morals when creating work such as advertisements and logos that could potentially influence a consumer. I enjoy treading the line between fine arts and applied arts and I have equal passion for both. |
