Artist Statement
I love photography’s ability to capture candid moments and memories. Time constantly
moves forward, and I enjoy taking photographs of these precious moments to preserve that
time. Images that evoke emotions and memories are ones I enjoy producing. I like to create images which spark someone’s own memories of their childhood, family, and home. When individuals view my work, I hope that they sense nostalgia and reflect upon their own personal experiences and emotions.
I enjoy photographing my family as well as landscapes of areas that remind me of home.
I want these images to capture my memories of Christmas, road trips, birthdays, and other
important events in my life so that they become tangible objects I may return to, revisit and remember. My work is meditative and reflective. I attempt to convey my personal values through my work by photographing things that are most important in my life. My work is representative of my beliefs, values, and personality.
I love working with film because of its honesty and truthfulness in capturing a moment. I
like that the film reflects what actually occurred and who or what was actually present in the particular scene. A film photograph can serve as an absolutely accurate memory of an event; nothing may be added or deleted to portray how one may have embellished the memory. The film shows what is there, and it does not deceive. I also appreciate the processing of images when using film. Each time I develop a print I feel as if I have witnessed a small miracle as the image magically appears. I attempt to carry these values to my digital photographs. I feel when I take an image I should respect what the camera has captured as alterations and editing often lead to loss of meaning for the photograph.
