Choosing A Major

Often the biggest decision a college student has ever faced, it does not need to be a permanent one. Remember:

  1. You can change your mind
  2. Your major does not have to indicate your career path
  3. Meredith College does not require students to declare a major until the end of their second year.

Steps to take in making a decision:

Along with these tips, our Making a Major
Decision magazine
can also guide you in this process.

Pursue classes you enjoyed in high school.

  • When planning your schedule, include classes you enjoyed.
  • Visit the Meredith Supply Store to browse the textbooks that are used in the classes.

Visit Academic & Career Planning (ACP).

  • Talk with a counselor to discuss ways we can assist you with the process.
  • Take assessments that help acknowledge your interests, values, skills and abilities, and personality type.
  • Research your options using our printed and online resources. Learn more about careers.
  • Take Career Planning Seminar (CPS 101), a one credit, half semester course, offered during the spring semester.
  • Participate in major exploration events or workshops.

Learn what is required for each major.

  • The catalogue for the year you entered includes requirements for every department's majors and minors and gives course descriptions.
  • Major checksheets and general education requirements for all degree programs can also be found in the Academic Planning & Support section.

Make connections.

  • Visit faculty, department heads, advisors, students in the major, alumnae, and ACP.
  • Join the ACP LinkedIn group to connect with other students and alumnae.
  • Additional strategies - conduct informational interviews, join professional associations, attend ACP events (i.e., workshops, panels, employer information sessions, mock interviews, career fairs, networking events, etc.) to meet career professionals.

Test it out.
