Hong Kong Baptist University, founded in 1956, is a highly respected university with a Christian heritage. HKBU offers a broad range of undergraduate as well as postgraduate degree courses. Located in the heart of Kowloon, the University is composed of three campuses that are easily accessible from all parts of Hong Kong with only a ten to fifteen minute walk from the Mass Transit Railway and Kowloon-Canton Railway Stations. These three campuses jointly offer students quality higher education in a modern, fully equipped, highly -technological environment.
The University focuses on academic excellence and emphasizes the equal importance of teaching excellence and high quality scholarship in its academic programs. The University has a total of 28 academic departments with over 550 full-time teaching staff and student population includes 6,600 undergraduates and 1,100 graduates. The University hosts a number of international students from all over the world to better promote cross-cultural experiences on the campus and focus on its goals of internationalization and enhancing language skills among all of its students. Meredith students will have the chance to participate in a variety of activities with local students as well as participate in the cultural exchange and learning that are so important to the campus.
Location
Hong Kong is a dynamic city of diversity marked by a vigorous blend of East and West. The population is over 6.5 million. The major languages are Cantonese, English, and Mandarin. It is known as a center for international business with growing U.S. investment in the area. In addition, Hong Kong is one of the world's most urban areas, but still has strong roots in Chinese tradition. You can see tai chi performed in the park, witness tea ceremonies, or visit the museums.
Curriculum
Students are required to take SOC2690 Understanding Chinese Society. They must also choose one of the following three electives: LANG 1000 Introductory Mandarin, LANG 2000 Intermediate Mandarin, or REL 3990 Religious Philosophical Chinese/English Encounters. Other courses may be selected from over 40 areas including business, communications, humanities, biology, chemistry, computer science, design, and social sciences.
Costs
Tuition, room, and board are typically less than those at Meredith--a real bargain!
Housing
International students will be housed in the NTT International House. This facility operates as a hotel on campus. Roommates will be assigned from among full-time local students and those from Mainland China. Rooms are tastefully decorated, with wall-to-wall carpet, private bath, air conditioning, and television.
Travel Opportunities
In June, international students may elect to participate in a specially designed two-week study tour in Beijing. Students will be housed at Tsinghua University and receive lectures in Chinese culture, society, and history. Other field trips are offered through the International Office during the semester in the city, to neighboring territories, as well as to mainland China.
Eligibility
Students must be in good academic and social standing at Meredith College. There is no foreign language competency requirement.
