The Counseling Center maintains a small library of self-help books on a variety of subjects (e.g. overcoming depression, stress management, improving relationships, recovery from substance abuse). Meredith students, faculty and staff are welcome to come by our office to pick up free copies of pamphlets or to check out a self-help book.

Local Resources

Wake County Human Services
Provides a wide variety of services, which are listed in the Service Index. They range from basic needs services such as food, clothing and housing, health care, education and community and emergency services.

Interact
Interact is a private, non-profit, United Way agency that provides safety, support, and awareness to victims and survivors of domestic violence and rape/sexual assault. Interact fulfills this mission through the support of its volunteers and community.

Holly Hill Hospital
Holly Hill Hospital provides treatment programs for children, adolescents and adults covering a wide range of behavioral health issues. Holly Hill is dedicated to providing excellent quality of care in a respectful environment that fosters hope and facilitates effective treatment for depression, anxiety and stress, bipolar disorder, other emotional and mood disorders, behavioral problems, alcohol abuse and dependency, illicit and prescription drug abuse and dependency.

Hospice of Wake County
For over 25 years, Hospice of Wake County has provided compassionate end-of-life care to the people of Wake and surrounding counties. Hospice strives to promote and improve our community’s quality of living and dying through advance care planning, palliative (comfort) care, hospice care and bereavement services.

Ever have questions about psychotherapy that you have always wanted to ask but may have never had the opportunity? This website, sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health, provides a wealth of information about the various forms of psychotherapy.

Critical Thinkers

Part of the mission of the college as well as the counseling center is to encourage students to become critical thinkers. Critical thinking skills are imperative in the classroom, as well as in every area of life. The critical thinking community aims to improve education in colleges and universities through emphasis on socratic questioning, critical reading and writing, higher order thinking, research, and quality enhancement. National Center for Victims of Crime: Stalking Resource Center
This site gives statistics, stalking laws for each state, national resources and more. For victim assistance you can call 1800-FYI-CALL.

George Mason University Sexual Assault Services

This site provides stalking statistics on college campuses and gives tips for reducing stalking on campus and includes other helpful information on related topics such as: healthy relationships, rape and sexual assault prevention and recovery.

Eating Disorders

Carolina House

Carolina House, located in Durham, North Carolina, offers residential treatment for eating disorders, provides exceptional and supportive care to individuals with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorders, and related issues. Trained staff seek to develop the whole person by utilizing techniques that value the patient's complete life.

Anorexia Nervosa and Related Eating Disorders (ANRED)
A nonprofit organization that provides information about anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, and other less well-known food and weight disorders. Our material includes self-help tips and information about recovery and prevention.

National Eating Disorders Association
The largest not-for-profit organization in the United States working to prevent eating disorders and provide treatment referrals to those suffering from anorexia, bulimia and binge eating disorder, and those concerned with body image and weight issues.

Something Fishy
A pro-recovery eating disorder website dedicated to raising awareness and providing support. Includes information, resources, referrals, etc.

Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG)
A national non-profit organization with over 200,000 members and supporters and over 500 affiliates in the United States.

Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network (RAINN)
The nation's largest anti-sexual assault organization. RAINN operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline and carries out programs to prevent sexual assault, help victims and ensure that rapists are brought to justice.

The federal government's source for women's health information. Provides basic information about sexual assault, date-rape drugs and prevention.
