Emergency & Crisis Information

The Counseling Center provides 24-hour crisis-intervention services throughout the regular academic year for students experiencing mental health crises (e.g. psychological trauma, thoughts of harming self or others). If you or someone you are assisting is experiencing a life-threatening emergency, and you are off campus, call 911 immediately; if you are on campus, call Campus Police at 8888, so they can call 911 and direct emergency vehicles to the correct location.

What is a crisis?
If you answer yes to any of the questions below, please seek assistance.

Have you experienced a personal, psychological, or physical trauma recently?
Has your level of distress increased significantly?
Has someone asked you to come to the Counseling Center or another mental health resource?
Are you having thoughts or have you made a plan to hurt yourself or others?

During Office Hours
When the Counseling Center is open, please call our office at 919-760-8427 or come by Carroll Hall to set up an appointment with a counselor. The Counseling Center also has a problem-solving hour Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10 a.m. and a crisis walk-in hour Monday through Friday at 1 p.m. Students in crisis may use this time to meet with a counselor. Please click here to find out the Counseling Center hours of operation.

Evenings & Weekends
After office hours and on weekends, students may use the counselor on call when they are in a crisis. The student must call the RD on duty at 919-612-6350, or call Campus Police at 919-760-8888 in order to reach the Counselor on Call. The RD or security officer will call the counselor on call, who will then call back the student at risk. Please note: There is no counselor-on-call available during the winter break or summer sessions. During these times, the Counseling Center strongly encourages students in crisis to use the community resources listed below.
